Job Announcement: Organic Certification Specialist

Baystate Organic Certifiers is operated by Massachusetts Independent Certification, Inc. (MIC).  MIC is a non-profit business incorporated in the state of Massachusetts, dedicated to sustainable agriculture and food certification, organized as a 501(c)3 corporation. MIC is dedicated to providing affordable certification services to farms using sustainable agriculture practices and to food processing and handling operations that produce sustainable agriculture products. Through its Baystate Organic Certifiers program, MIC is dedicated to providing affordable and timely organic certifications to farmers in the Northeastern United States, and to processors and handlers in the continental United States. Baystate Organic Certifiers certifies farms using organic agriculture practices and food processing and handling operations that produce organic agriculture products.

The Organic Certification Specialist is a full-time employee of Baystate Organic Certifiers.  This is a remote position with the ideal candidate working form a home office based on the east coast.

Job Duties: The Certification Specialists perform technical reviews of crop, wild crop, livestock, or processor applications to determine whether the operation is in compliance with the appropriate standards.  Certification Specialists submit written reports to the Executive Director for review.

Job Skills: Certification Specialists must possess education, training, work experience, or life knowledge and experience in the area they are reviewing. Candidates for the Certification Specialist position are evaluated individually before they are hired, to verify that they are competent to review the category of operations that they are responsible for reviewing. A certification Specialist must be dependable and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.  Minimal travel is required for this position to attend staff meetings and training in North Dighton, MA 2-3 times a year. Additional travel may be requested to assist in representing Baystate Organic Certifiers at outreach events throughout the east coast. Knowledge of computers, word processing programs and databases is a must as this is a remote position with most communication being electronic. Office equipment will be provided.  The employee must provide a telephone line and high speed internet.

Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. degree or higher in applicable field such as environmental science, agriculture, OR commensurate and relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the USDA NOP National Organic Standards and how they apply to various scopes of certification (Crops, Wild Crops, Livestock, Handling)
  • Experience in Agriculture or Livestock, preferably organic
  • Competency in word processing, formatting, databases, and email using applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to use a computer for multiple hours at a time
  • Strong attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with environmental regulatory programs
  • Experience with organic regulations or industry
  • IOIA Organic Inspector training or equivalent experience

This is a full-time position. Hourly wage is dependent upon experience. Benefits include paid vacation and 401k retirement plan option.
